Pants, the best cat ever, is missing -- have you seen him?

It's always sad to see missing pet signs, but this one is especially sweet. An owner is looking for the best cat ever, a roughly 6-year old orange male cat who "sometimes kind of responds to the name Pants."

It has a sparkly black collar. If you've seen him, please give the number a call. Sounds like a nice cat and an owner who really misses him.

Big 11th Street Halloween event for kids, families and dogs tomorrow: costume contest, parade, trick-or-treating, more

Halloween is upon us, and the North Columbia Heights Civic Association is putting on what sounds like a really fun 11th Street extravaganza. There will be games, craft tables, costume contests for kids and dogs (separate ones,) music, a parade, and trick-or-treating on the street and more. I bet there will be a lot of cute kids and funny dogs.

A lot of local businesses are involved too, hosting part of it or helping out. Nice to see this.

A reader spotted this today, can you help?

(Note that this picture isn't the dog, just a picture to give you an idea of what a tan Shih Tzu looks like.)

11th Street Dog Park cleanup this Saturday from 10am-2pm; get 15% off or a free beer at KBC!

Here's a nice opportunity to help out in the neighborhood: a cleanup of the Columbia Heights Dog Park at 11th and Park Rd. There will also be some new fencing for the park and some new soil and such. And you get a deal at Kangaroo Boxing Club afterwards!
This Saturday, October 19, 2013 the Civic Association will be sponsoring a clean up of the Columbia Heights Dog Park at 11th St and Park Rd, NW. We'll be scooping, sweeping, raking and collecting trash from 10am-2pm. Also, thanks to a grant from ANC 1A we have purchased pet friendly fencing/barrier material so we can repair the fence perimeter and prevent little dogs (and balls) from escaping. Finally, if the manpower is there we'll have the topsoil and bark mulch available to freshen up the tree boxes.

If you'd like to volunteer please get in touch via email to patrick.flynn@anc.dc.gov to let us know you'll be coming so we can plan accordingly.

Finally, as a thank you, there will be a 15% discounted lunch (or a free beer) at Kangaroo Boxing Club to anyone who helps with the clean up.

Thanks,

Winston the Skateboarding Bulldog returns: an interview with his owner!

You may remember a few months ago when I posted about Winston the Skateboarding Dog -- a local bulldog, he rides around the neighborhood on his skateboard. Questlove of the Roots was in town a few months ago and spotted Winston, snapping his picture on Instagram. I dubbed him the coolest dog in Columbia Heights (or maybe the world.)

A bit ago, Winston's owner James Turner got in touch with me and agreed to answer a few question about Winston, how he learned to skateboard, and more. Thanks to James, and enjoy everybody!

How long have you had Winston? How did you find him?

Winston is seven, but don't tell him, and originally from Colombia, South America. He has three daddies and multiple uncles. His original owner passed Winston's care to Bruce Arnold and myself. After 20 years, I had little interest in a dog, but Winston quickly changed that opinion. Even as a puppy he had huge personality. Bruce lives at 1st and U St, NW, where Winston spends most of his time.

Winston is well socialized and believes he has multiple homes. So spoiled that he will sometimes decide he wants to stay where he is visiting and pick him up later, especially with one of his Uncles with a pool.

How did you discover his skateboarding talents?

One evening, Bruce was over and we saw a skateboarding bulldog on TV. Thinking no one is smarter than Winston, we rushed to Target to get him a Spongebob skateboard. He immediately took to it, did not really know what it was, but he was determined to figure it out. Within a few weeks he was able to push himself along and to ride. His talents improved over time, he got better skateboards, and now his own custom-built.

You said he prefers the skateboard to walking, can you tell us more?

Skateboarding isn't his only sport. He loves playing ball -- well, taking the basketball or soccer ball and pushing it around. Bruce had taken him to the area near DCA, while getting out of the car and grabbing the skateboard, Winston saw a soccer game, ran onto the field and took the ball and began pushing it around. Needless to say, it stopped the game and certainly got attention.

I know Questlove from the Roots took a photo of Winston, have you had any other celebrity interactions or publicity?

Bruce and friends had stopped by Palace Five to get Winston's skateboard tuned-up. Just happened that Questlove was in the area. Did not know it was him until saw his posting. Videos and photos are the norm when he is out. Being the ham he is, he will almost stop and pose.

And how can somebody each teach their dog to skateboard?

Bulldogs, center of gravity, are naturals for all types of boarding. Some say it is just another way they find to avoid exercise and ride around.

Winston was fortunate to also have a trainer, aka walker, who takes him boarding with a focus on improving his skills. Devin Miller, (brighterdayscollective.com, see banner photo,) is fabulous with Winston, and don't trust just anyone with the little fella.

I would suggest medical insurance not just for the usual problems but also sports injuries. Winston jumped while boarding and sprained wrist, (see picture) which took him out of commission for 8 weeks (and was he cranky).

The injury was last summer. He's now pawing through brochures for Alaksan Cruises.

Winston the skateboarding bulldog is the coolest dog in Columbia Heights (or the world?)

I've written a few times about the skateboarding dog in our neighborhood -- once because I found a random video and another time because Questlove of The Roots spotted him at 14th and W and took an Instagram of him. Since then I decided to find out some more, and while I didn't get many details, I did find a bunch of other awesome videos of him around the neighborhood. Enjoy!

And if you are Winston's owner, or know who that is, please email me! I'd love to talk to you.
Winston's owner got in touch with me, so stay tuned for more coming soon!

Arf: residents working to fix up 11th and Park dog park, but WMATA needs to say OK

Site of Unofficial Dog Park

The 11th and Park dog park has long been a (semi-official) place to take Spuds, Fido and Rex to do their business and run around. However, the park, which is technically WMATA property but which has been open for dogs and their people, is a bit worse for the wear.

Some local residents are getting together to form a Friends of Columbia Heights Dog Park in order to work with WMATA and get some of the issues addressed. One of the groups organizers told DCist that they're hoping to put down some new ground material, a new gate, closing small areas and creating enforceable rules.

"We're totally willing to do all the work, but need guidance and input from [WMATA] to ensure they still have all the access they need to do what they do."

The group also a quick survey on their website for community input.

They'll be discussing the group at the June 10th meeting of the North Columbia Heights Civic Association, which will meet at the Trolley Turnaround Park (11th and and Monroe.)

Questlove of the Roots spotted in the neighborhood, photographing skateboarding dogs!

This is pretty funny: I follow Questlove, the drummer for hip-hop band The Roots, on Instagram, and the other day he posted this photo of a skateboarding dog he spotted at  about 14th and W. I'm not sure why he was in town, but it's pretty cool to see -- both him in the neighborhood, and a skateboarding dog! Has anybody else spotted this totally extreme dog around?

A number of famous types have visited our neighborhood in the past, including fellow hip-hopper Lady Sovereign, a British rapper who I saw a couple of years ago. For the whole list (including the Obamas, Jessica Alba and a lot more,) check out our previous famous people posts!

People, clean up your dog's poop!!!

I don't understand what's wrong with people sometimes: the other day I saw this little flotilla of dog turds on a sidewalk on 14th Street. It wasn't even really close to a tree box. I know dogs do their business where they choose, but at least give it a shot.

And no matter where Spuds chooses to poop, it's super easy to carry a plastic bag with you, pick up the result, and toss it into a garbage can. The cans are usually not more than a block away in any direction. Thankfully I didn't step in this archipelago of poo, but they were certainly step-in-able.
